Charles Aslin (1893–1959) spent his life in local authority employment but his significance lies in his work as County Architect for Hertfordshire from 1945. As a result of the so-called Butler Education Act of 1946, huge numbers of new schools needed to be built. For Hertfordshire, Aslin designed a much imitated system of prefabricated school buildings, using light-weight welded steel frames and various kinds of cladding.
