A view of Charing Cross, London, with Eleanor Cross monument in foreground, Charing Cross Hotel in right middle distance, and Charing Cross Station in left middle distance. Engraved by H. Adlard. The station was originally opened by the South Eastern Railway in 1864 and the Clermont Hotel, formerly the Grosvenor, was London's first railway hotel, built in 1865. A new Eleanor cross was erected in 1865 outside Charing Cross railway station, several hundred yards from the original site.
