Catherine of Braganza was Queen Consort to Charles II. There are a number of versions of this portrait, copied after Sir Peter Lely's three-quarter length original in the Douglas-Home collection. This reduced-length adaptation varies from Lely's painting in a number of ways. The sitter is placed, for example, in a foliate oval cartouche and has pearls in her hair. Although she wears the same dress, in the original work it was black as a mark of mourning for her mother who died in 1666. Here, it is coloured blue, suggesting that the present interpretation was painted later.
