The sitter was a romantic poet who was the daughter of Dr Rev Henry Bathurst and was born in Durham on 14 September 1797 whilst he was canon at the cathedral. She married Heaton de Champion de Crespigny in 1820. She lived for many years in Heidelberg where she died on 26 December 1861.
