This painting is the earliest known painted view of Carlisle. Cannon on the Citadel and Castle are being fired and flags are flying, possibly in celebration of an important event. This viewpoint showing Carlisle from the north east became popular with artists. It shows Eden Bridges, the City Walls, the Cathedral and on the far right Stanwix Church. The road in the foreground was the main road leading from Eden Bridges to Newcastle in the east before the Military Road was completed in 1757. This is now the present Brampton Road. Read was born in London but settled in Cumbria. He is regarded as the father of painting in Cumberland. His most famous work 'A Bird's Eye View of Whitehaven' is also painted on a panel.
