Anna Richards Brewster was the daughter of the American artist, William Trost Richards (1833–1905). Besides with her father, she also studied with William Merritt Chase and John La Farge before travelling to Paris to attend the Acadamie Julian. Later on she continued to travel and work in Europe as well as the Middle East. This painting of 'Careening Hard, St Peter Port' was painted in 1897, the same year her father painted 'Petit Port Bay, Guernsey' (GMG 1998.47). It is therefore likely the father and daughter visited Guernsey together on the same trip.
