In 1911 Sickert was closely involved with the foundation of the short-lived but influential Camden Town Group, whose other members included Harold Gilman, Spencer Gore, and Robert Bevan. This smokey scene with broken, dark colours is one of several interiors with a figure and an iron bedstead painted in 1915–1916 at Sickert's studio at 8 Fitzroy Street. Here, the figure is a fully realised portrait. The woman's hat lies on the cupboard behind her head. The painting was given through the Contemporary Art Society for Wales in memory of Captain G. C. H. Crawshay in 1956.
