The report on the unveiling ceremony, in the 'John o' Groat Journal' (Friday 1st October 1909), identifies the tower's designer as the Kirkintilloch-born Scottish architect John Shanks (1866–1944). An additional attachment from the same newspaper (Friday 8th October issue) gives the details of those also involved in its erection, including the contractor Donald Harper, the plasterer Mr Smith and the memorial inscriptions' carver Mr Hood.
