Standing on a stone plinth, the statue shows Brian Clough as a young man, in a 1950s Middlesbrough football strip. According to the artist it aims to show 'the passion and bloody-mindedness of this young man.' It was unveiled by his widow Barbara, with help from school children from his old school, Marton Grove. The statue was removed in March 2009 when cracks developed in his leg – the same leg which was injured in 1962, ending Clough's playing career. The damage was possibly due to children swinging on the knee. It was returned in June 2009, with a redesigned plinth to support the leg, designed to make it look as if he was walking down a step. Further repairs were necessary in 2016 and again in 2021. Repairs to the latter injury have been delayed due to the Covid pandemic.
