This work was first erected in 1906 in Cornhill and later moved to Christchurch Park in 1931. There is a stepped square-section plinth with attached bronze plaques to each of the four faces of the upper stage; the plaques are inscribed with the names of soldiers. A life-size bronze statue of a soldier in uniform rests his rifle barrel on his advanced left foot, in an attitude of contemplation.
