John Alexander, known as Blind Johnnie, was a local character in Stranraer. He played the recorder or his squeeze box around the town. These original artefacts now both rest in the Stranraer Museum. Johnny died at the age of 70 on 26th March 1905. In 2012, the local community were given an opportunity to decide which character from the town's history should be selected for a new piece of artwork. The design for the sculpture is based upon the form of a squeezebox. From certain angles, the silhouette of Blind Johnnie is visible by the gap formed at the centre of the piece.
