The two figures are sharply detailed, portrayed with sinuous lines typical of Creswick. At the base of Art, the female figure, Creswick added a bust of Minerva, the goddess of the crafts and wisdom. He also added two shoots of bay laurel, symbolic of victory and referring here to the industrial and commercial success of Birmingham. They frame the shield and lead the eye up to the crown above.
