A description by the artist, 'Each of the 25 railing fence posts have a circle detail. Into this circle is a sculptural portrait of a bird. These birds are locally significant and many were selected by children involved with the project; 10 birds are native and most are common to the area and recognized from the Bird Census at Kibblesworth 2000. In addition, five exotic birds are included that connect to Kibblesworth: the Canary was the bird of the mines as working bird and a symbol of the freedom from the underground; the Pelican has never been seen before in Kibblesworth no doubt, but this bird was the heraldic symbol and seal of Johanis (John) de Kibblesworth the first recorded individual associated with the village in the twelfth and thirteenth century; the Hoopoe – one of the members at the lunch club I talked with remembered a hoopoe being spotted close to the village, 'many years back' and a chase into County Durham; the Budgerigar; the Phoenix – underneath these bird circles are 25 squares that show images that connect the birds to us through their environment: The nests they create, the food they eat or a picture of how we view them.
