A Labrador lays facing front, on straw, in what probably is her kennels. Bernardine appears to have been Joséphine Bowes' dog, and is also represented at the feet of her mistress in another painting in the Museum’s collection by Antoine Dury (‘Joséphine Bowes, Countess of Montalbo’, 1850). The painting is inscribed ‘á Me J. Delorme/T.Dury’ and may therefore have been a gift to Joséphine whose stage name when she was an actress at the Théátre des Variétés in Paris was Madame Delorme.
