This painting of Barrow Town Hall by local artist Graham Twyford, is part of a series of paintings, including 'Askam-in-Furness' by Bill Bell, 'Triptych' by Christine Isherwood, 'Ramsden Square' by Ron Moon, and 'Dalton Castle and 'The Cavendish' by Jamie West, commissioned by Barrow Borough Council to commemorate the centenary of the Town Hall in 1987. This work is pastel with some acrylic underpainting. Graham Twyford trained at Goldsmiths College, London and graduated in 1979 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art. He works in most painting and graphic mediums with oil painting forming the major part of his output. Landscape features largely in this work interspersed with imaginative invention/illustration. Taking influence from American and British landscape traditions such as the Luminists and the Hudson River School he applies similar working methods in a response to diverse Lakeland landscapes.
