Many of Louis de Caullery paintings illustrate outdoor scenes of elegant entertainments, like the banquet represented in this picture. The activities of the party seated under the trees emphasise the enjoyment of sensual pleasures. Allusions to the five senses and their objects, including painting, can be found in the figures of the female reader, her musical companion, the courting couples, the wine-drinkers and the bashful-looking woman to whom a rose is offered on the left.
