The central strip of the banner is occupied by the sword, Dhu'l-Faqar (see TXT 36), with dragon-headed quillons and a Qur'anic inscription on the blades, from the surah al-Nisa' (IV), part of verse 95 and the whole of verse 96. The upper strip bears roundels with a verse from the surah Hud (XI) and the lower with the names of Allah, Muhammad, Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman and 'Ali and prayers for the favour of God upon them, both individually and collectively.
