This painting depicts a typical view at Dungeness where the artist bought a cottage in 1980, next to Prospect Cottage, which was later acquired by the filmmaker Derek Jarman. It is a place of limitless shingle horizons, scattered fishermen’s shacks and signal-like telegraph poles. The track of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway crosses the road here and summer visitors come to brave the windy shore. Brian Yale had a distinguished career as artist and designer. He trained at the Royal College of Art, taught at Hornsey College of Art between 1962 and 1968, and lectured in the USA and at the Sir John Cass College, London. He visited Israel in 1979 and Yugoslavia with the British Council in 1981. He exhibited widely in the UK, USA and Hong Kong, and is represented in major collections including Tate.
