Augusta of Saxe-Gotha (1719–1772) was the mother of George III. Her husband, Frederick Louis was the son of George II, but died before he could succeed the throne.

The Royal couple visited Bath in 1738. An obelisk was erected in their honour, in Queen Square. Three years later they gave their portraits to the City, to hang splendidly in the Guildhall.
