A modern marble sculpture after the classical portrait style of the early Roman Empire. The bust replaced Antinous (lover of Emperor Hadrian) in the domed tribune of Lord Burlington’s villa at Chiswick. The youth looks to the right, his eyes are deep-set and gaze downwards. Short locks of hair are well defined over the forehead and his brow is lightly furrowed. The face has an emotive style typical of Roman portraits whereas the bare and youthful shoulders display the ideal physique of the Greek hero. Minor damage is visible on the lower edge of the cloak, bridge and tip of the nose. The bust is inspired by the statue of Marcus Claudius Marcellus, nephew, son-in-law and adopted heir of Augustus, 1st Emperor of Rome (Louvre Museum).
