Following the First World War there was a large demand for memorial windows like this one designed by Arthur Anselm Orr in about 1926. It depicts two of the four Archangels named in the bible. Saint Gabriel is shown holding lilies with doves and a mountain landscape. Saint Michael is frequently depicted fighting the forces of evil, and here holds a sword and shield above a scene with barbed wire and ruined buildings evocative of the First World War battlefields. Orr designed windows for a number of commercial firms and studios up to the 1930s. He was influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and much of his glass also has an elegant Art Nouveau feel.
