A horseman, tightly wrapped in his cape and with his face half hidden, rides through a nocturnal, bare landscape. He wears a uniform underneath the cape and a tricorn on his head. The cape streams behind him, and it snows heavily. The horse walks from the right to the left and seems exhausted. Its hoof prints are visible in the snow.
