An outdoor scene with a wooden fence and a thatched house in the background. In the front, three gentlemen stand to the left observing a fourth gentleman crouching before them looking at an inscribed stone. A fifth man dressed in a smock stands behind him scratching his head. All five men have a surprised and puzzled expression. The crouching man, Mr Pickwick, is holding a handkerchief in his hand; an umbrella lies before him on the ground. The engraver\'s signature is in the lower left corner, Phiz\'s, inverted, is in the right lower corner.
