Victor Evstaf’ev was a young Soviet painter employed by the State Darwin Museum in Moscow. This work was initially sent to the British Museum of Natural History in 1958 as part of an array of artistic, photographic and scientific gifts sent to various institutions in the UK to celebrate the Darwin centenaries of 1958 and 1959. The British Museum of Natural History agreed to donate the paintings to the Royal College of Surgeons – then the custodians of Down House (Darwin's family home in Kent) – for display at Down House.
