The sitter was the second surviving son of Henry, 1st Marquis Conyngham and Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph Denison Esq. of Denbies, Surrey. He succeeded to the large estate and fortunes of his maternal uncle Lord Albert Conyngham, assumed the surname and arms of Denison, and was elevated to the peerage by the title of Baron Londesborough.
The painting is an oil sketch for the finished full-length portrait.
