The Alan Bush Music Trust raised money for the casting of the bust. A note records: 'The Trust has just learnt that the portrait bust of Alan Bush by Ian Walters, completed in 1982, is still available. Walters approached Alan Bush sometime in 1981 and offered to do a portrait bust of him. Bush had several sittings for the bust at his home in Radlett in January 1982, which was completed soon after this'.
The bust was cast at Francis Buchanan Limited and placed on its granite plinth prior to removal to the Royal Academy of Music in June 2008.
