Admiral Nelson, in this under life-size statue wears a naval uniform displaying the empty sleeve of his missing arm. The statue is presented on a drum-shaped pedestal surrounded by a railing expressed as pikes linked by a twisted cable with, at each corner, an upturned cannon supporting a cluster of pikes and a ship's lantern. The figure of Nelson, in casual pose, is depicted in a realistic manner. Less realistic is the out-of-scale portrayal of his flagship, 'Victory', against which he leans. The statue was unveiled as part of the celebrations for the Golden Jubilee of George III. This was the first publicly-funded statue to be erected in Birmingham and the first memorial to Nelson to be erected in Britain. It was moved in 1961 during the development of the Bull Ring area and was re-sited in its present location, with a new plain pedestal and without lamps.
