Francis Gower
1905–1995
Painter, notably of portraits, teacher and illustrator. He studied from early 1920s at St Martin’s School of Art with Stafford Leake; won a scholarship to Royal College of Art, 1929–32, where his teachers included Randolph Schwabe, Gilbert Spencer and Barnett Freedman; studied at evening classes for a diploma in the history of art at London University; and continued with evening classes at St Martin’s.
