In Greek mythology, Actaeon was a handsome young hunter with a loyal pack of hounds. When he spurned the attentions of the goddess Artemis, she turned him into a stag and his own hounds ripped him to shreds. By 1911, HMS 'Actaeon' was a training ship anchored at Sheerness, Kent, as the Royal Navy's Torpedo School. The painting has a rightful place in the collection of the Fleet Air Arm Musuem, as the first Royal Navy pilots to be trained were assigned to HMS 'Actaeon' during their flying training at Eastchurch from 1911.
