Martineau studied with Holman Hunt, shared his studio until 1857, and remained a close friend all his life. He is not known to have visited Italy. The model for this painting was probably a member of the large Italian colony in the area of London round Holborn, which included a significant element from the region of San Germano (now Monte Cassino). She wears traditional Neapolitan costume.
