A landscape was an unusual subject for Edward Villiers Rippingille but he used it here for political comment. The bleak scenery and threatening weather set the mood and the disconsolate family group is the focus. The artist suggests the hard life of a common soldier in the British army but the full story is not clear. It is up to the viewer to decide whether the soldier must return to his regiment or has been demobbed and has no income.
