On the left a pale young woman lies in bed. Centre, a physician in formal black costume takes the pulse of her left wrist with his right hand, and with his left hand holds up a flask of her urine for examination. On the right stand the patient's agitated parents. The room is richly furnished. On the left is a table covered with a Persian carpet; on it stands a wicker basket for the urine flask. Right background, floor-to-ceiling tapestries showing sylvan scenes. Top, a painted ceiling in which Cupid is depicted, with his arrow pointing down to the patient, perhaps representing love-sickness, sexual frustration or pregnancy.
