This portrait of the novelist A. J. Cronin by Stephen Conroy went on display at Dumbarton Library in 1986. It is one of several commissioned by Dumbarton District Council in 1984 and is now the property of West Dunbartonshire Council. The subject, A. J. Cronin, was born at Cardross, Dunbartonshire in 1896, and spent his youth at Dumbarton. He studied medicine at Glasgow University, and had a successful career as a doctor in different parts of Britain. He combined his medical career with novel-writing, with some settings in his native Dunbartonshire, e.g. 'Hatter's Castle'. He also created the Dr Finlay character who featured in two TV series of 'Dr Finlay's Casebook'. He died in Switzerland in 1981. The artist, Stephen Conroy, was born in Helensburgh in 1964 and brought up in the parental home at Renton, two miles from Dumbarton.
