A monochrome panel painting showing shipping off a Dutch harbour. A whaler is shown running in towards the harbour in a lively sea, with other shipping in the distance and a town on the horizon. A small fishing boat is in the centre, and a kaag can be seen over on the left.

The artist specialised in making grisaille paintings which so closely resemble the work of Willem van de Velde the Elder, that it is possible he was his pupil. He also painted monochrome pictures in oils. This method used a pen and brush in black pigment with many of the lines having a browned, grey wash. Stumped black chalk or graphite was also applied on off-white grounded oak panel.

The painting is signed ‘C:P Mooy’ in black pigment in cursive script on the floating barrel or buoy on the left.
