Tony Goble might be termed a magical realist, with subjects from his own life transformed by free association into other-worldly narratives. This painting, with its flat, comic book presentation of raw childhood in a vividly coloured environment, has a realism that later became absorbed into characteristic dream-like symbolism. In his vivid imagery Goble included birds, boats, medieval sculptures and Coptic icons alongside his own pictorial persona. 'Painting,' he said, 'is somewhere between seeing and believing; somewhere between dreams and the wake-a-day world'. Raised in the care of a Welsh-speaking family until reunited with his mother and elder sisters in Llandudno, he was educated at Rhos-on-Sea and Wrexham College of Art. He married in 1963 and settled at Llanfairfechan.
