The name '603' refers to the number of the former Elliot Colliery engine. The cam shape of this work is inspired by the gigantic cams in the pit-winding wheel, now housed in the nearby museum. The design was developed with the local community and celebrates the industrial history that moulded the community and local area. The piece incorporates an optical lighting strip providing added visual interest. The sculpture suggests movement, which is highlighted by a 20-degree tilt from upright, symbolising the transition of time and the transformation of the area from past to present and future.
