Painter, son of the painter Colin Hunter and husband of the artist Mary Young Hunter, his first wife. He was born in Glasgow and studied at the Royal Academy Schools, his teachers including John Singer Sargent and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Travelled extensively with his wife on the continent. He was at first influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and was later mainly a portrait painter, his pictures sometimes being rather glamorous with a high finish. He lived in Suffolk for some time, but the latter part of his life was spent in America and died in Taos, New Mexico. Exhibited widely, including RA, Fine Art Society and elsewhere. Pyms Gallery held a show of both Young Hunters’ works in 2000. Tate Gallery holds his Chantrey Bequest picture My Lady’s Garden.
