Painter, printmaker, jeweller, cutler, sculptor, illustrator and teacher, born in Bristol, married to the artist Fred Whicker. Despite family opposition she studied at Bristol Municipal School of Art under Reginald Bush, returning to teach there until towards the end of World War II. In 1934 she was a founding member of New Bristol Arts Club, serving as its first president, its aim being to enliven the city’s art scene. Cross made etchings of Bristol, in its City Art Gallery collection. Soon after the war the Whickers moved to Falmouth and became members of the St Ives Society of Artists. Gwen became a noted flower painter, a leading figure at Falmouth School of Art as a teacher and governor. She showed at RA, SWA, RWA, ROI and extensively overseas.
