Painter and draughtsman, born in Taubenpreskeln, Germany. As a boy he was encouraged to paint by the artist Otto Dix. Taken prisoner of war while serving in the German Air force, Weschke arrived in Britain in 1945. Studied at St Martin’s School of Art, 1949. After meeting with members of the David Bomberg-inspired Borough Group in Spain in 1953 and a period in Sweden in 1954–5, Weschke moved to Cornwall in 1955 after becoming acquainted with the artist Bryan Wynter in London. Five years later he settled at Cape Cornwall, St Just, by which time he was a member of the Penwith Society. Weschke went on to win an Arts Council Major Award in 1976; he was a John Moores Liverpool Exhibition prizewinner in 1978; a Southwest Arts Major Award winner in the same year; and two years later he won an Arts Council Purchase Award.
