Artist, notably in pastel, fond of landscapes and seascapes, whose full name was Arthur Geoffrey Gascoyne Webb. He was born at Newington, in Kent, and was a self-taught artist who had a chequered career. After education at Wellington College, he entered the Royal Navy in 1914, serving at the battle of Jutland. He also served in the Navy in World War II, and finished with the rank of lieutenant-commander. At other times he taught cricket at several schools; served under the Colonial Office in Nigeria, becoming an expert on Hausa language and customs; was secretary of the Leicestershire County Cricket Club and played for it; and held senior posts in the King George’s Fund for Sailors. He painted a lot in East Anglia, and showed at PS, NS, Woodbridge Gallery and elsewhere.
