Painter, designer and draughtsman, born in Ipswich, Suffolk. She was noted for her watercolours, rich in colour and assuredly designed. Studied at Ipswich Art School. Walne’s future husband, Frank Ward, then an art student in London, brought her work to the notice of the Wertheim Gallery’s proprietor, Lucy Wertheim, who later recorded in her book Adventure in Art how vivid and dynamic the artist’s work appeared. Thus it was given a first solo show in 1935, when it was also included in a show of contemporary watercolours at Salford Art Gallery. Salford Art Gallery gave Walne a retrospective in 1986, which partly drew on its own extensive collection of her work. Towner Art Gallery, in Eastbourne, and Auckland City Art Gallery, New Zealand, also hold examples.
