Figurative painter, teacher and draughtsman, often working on a large scale, sometimes rather dark pictures with Kitchen Sink School overtones. Brother of the artist Jo Volley, he was born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, attending the School of Art there, 1967–70; Slade School of Fine Art, 1970–5; with a Boise Travelling Scholarship, 1975. Group shows included John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, 1982. Had solo exhibitions with Ian Birksted Gallery, 1981 and 1983, then with Browse & Darby from 1986. Showed work in a large, international retrospective at the Water Museum in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2002. The designer Paul Smith, actor John Cleese and The Duke of Devonshire owned his work. Lived for a time in north London.
