Portrait painter, pottery designer, etcher and teacher, born in Overton, Hampshire. He studied at Farnham School of Art, then became a pottery painter and designer in the Midlands. Further study followed at Stoke-on-Trent School of Art and Hanley School of Art. From 1913–19 Tomlinson was art director to the Crown Staffordshire China Company. He studied etching under Frank Short at the Royal College of Art and for a time travelled on the continent. Tomlinson was principal of Cheltenham College of Arts and Crafts, 1922–5, and acting principal of the Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1935–6 and 1939–46. His main position was as senior inspector of art for London County Council, 1925–51. Among various official positions with art bodies he was for a time president of the Royal Drawing Society and he was master of the Art Workers’ Guild, 1955.
