Artist in various media, working originally in a figurative style, then abstract, born in Boston, Lincolnshire. He attended Leicester College of Art, 1951–4, then Slade School of Fine Art, 1954–7. In latter year was influenced by Japanese films and brush paintings. After a first solo show at Lords Gallery in 1958 was awarded a French Government Scholarship and lived in Paris 1959–62, where he became interested in new American painting and began to roller and pour paint and use experimental fabrics. Worked in Rome, then in America from 1965, in 1966 becoming affiliated with the Betty Parsons Gallery with which he was associated for many years. Designed furniture for Gavina factory in Italy. In late 1960s made a series of works using rubber matting, some calling for audience participation.
