Painter, designer, publisher and illustrator, born in Warsaw, Poland, daughter of the painter Jakob Weinles. She attended Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts with the highest distinction, 1924–30, lived in Paris, 1937–40, and from then on lived in London. She worked in several fields, collaborating with her husband, the writer Stefan Themerson, on experimental films, illustrated books for children which he wrote and in 1948 with him founded the Gaberbocchus Press, of which she was art director. Her theatre designs included productions of Ubu Roi and Ubu Enchainé, by Alfred Jarry, and of Threepenny Opera, by Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill. Themerson took part in many mixed exhibitions and major solo shows included Gallery One, from 1957; Whitechapel Art Gallery, 1975; and a Polish tour, 1981–2.
