Painter, draughtsman, mural artist, printmaker, teacher and latterly sculptor, born in Walsall Wood, Staffordshire. Studied at Southport and Liverpool Schools of Art and at Royal College of Art where his teachers included Tom Monnington, Randolph Schwabe and A K Lawrence, whom he helped complete the Bank of England murals. Showed at RA, Archer Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum and in the provinces. Nottinghamshire Education Committee bought his work. Held several art teaching posts, then became the first principal, for 31 years until 1968, of Mansfield College of Art; was art adviser to Nottinghamshire Education Committee. A forthrightly outspoken man of “progressive” views, Sutton had many interests, including the Blake Society, was a founder of the Midland Group of Artists, president of the Mansfield Art Society and helped found the Nottinghamshire Puppetry Guild, which toured the county on a coal cart.
