Painter and architect, born in Essex, who started his career in an architect’s office while studying architecture, painting and drawing. At the start of World War II he joined the Royal Engineers, serving in north Africa, Iraq, Persia and Germany. Sturgeon resumed his studies after hostilities, qualifying in 1951. As well as being a fellow of the RIBA Sturgeon joined the Wapping Group in 1956, being its president 1972–7, was elected RI, 1961, and RSMA in 1970. The David Curzon Gallery posthumously showed Sturgeon’s work, which reflected his extensive travels. Lived in Great Bookham, Surrey.
