Artist in oil and pencil on carved and sawn hardboard, and teacher, born in Devonport, Plymouth. He studied at Northern Polytechnic School of Architecture where Cecil Stephenson greatly influenced him, resulting in a change to painting. He sparked Stevenson’s lifelong interest in the work of Ben Nicholson, Cecil Stephenson’s neighbour in Hampstead. Stevenson then studied for his national diploma in painting at St Martin’s School of Art, teachers including Vivian Pitchforth, Frederick Gore and John Wheatley. After gaining his teaching diploma at London University Stevenson began teaching at Medway College of Art, Rochester and from 1960–83 was on the staff of Buckinghamshire College of Higher Education. From 1984 Stevenson devoted himself to painting.
