Arthur John Smith [also known as A.J. Smith] was born in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England in c.1847 [1]. By the early 1870s he had moved to London. Nothing has been traced about his training as an artist. Between 1880 and 1917 he exhibited at the New Gallery, Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists in London; Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Nottingham Castle Museum; and the Walker Art Gallery in London. He also participated in the first exhibition of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in London in 1888.
