British painter and graphic artist. He studied at the College of Art in his native Birmingham and at the *Slade School, London. After teaching at various art colleges, he moved to New York in 1967 and lived there until 1978. In the USA his style changed abruptly from a mechanical style of abstraction to *Superrealism and by the mid-1970s he had become one of the best-known artists working in this vein. His main theme is the automobile, particularly cars that have been wrecked or abandoned and left to rust (A-OK Auto, 2002–3, City Art Gallery, Southampton).
